In December 1937 the Japanese army took the Chinese capital and, over roughly six weeks, killed somewhere between two and three hundred thousand civilians and prisoners. Iris Chang wrote the first full English account.

She tells it three ways: from the Japanese side, from the Chinese, and from the small group of Westerners who stayed and established a safety zone that saved perhaps a quarter of a million people. The final section, on the decades of official denial and the absence of Nanking from Japanese textbooks, is the part that made the book a diplomatic incident.
