This novel although written for a younger reader should appeal to adults as well. I love the author's simplistic writing style that allows the reader to fully immerse themselves in a foreign land and culture. The writing style of the author brings the color and beauty to life of Afghanistan in a way I never imagined before.

Although the culture is alien to a western reader, the themes of the novel form a way to connect to the characters and feel what its like to live in current Afghanistan. Its interesting that the story line and background for this story, although modern for Afghanistan, brings the reader back to pre-modern Europe. The story reads almost identical to Europe's pre-modern abduction myths and as a history major I found that incredibly fascinating.

The story itself is beautifully tragic, incredibly sad at some points and yet still hopeful. The story line of the cousin is more compelling to me than either of the two lovers. This novel is perfect for high school teachers looking to give their students something outside the box to read while still conforming to a traditional story-line. I recommend this book for everyone to read. So often we are inundated with the violence of the news from this region. Its worth it to read a fictional story that allows us to connect on an emotional and historical level.
