The Sickness Unto Death by Søren Kierkegaard

Kierkegaard's sickness unto death is despair, and his definition of it is not sadness — it is the self failing to be itself, which he argues is the ordinary condition of almost everybody, most of whom have no idea they are in it.

He catalogues the forms: the despair of not being conscious of having a self, the despair of not wanting to be oneself, and the despair of wanting to be oneself on one's own terms, which he considers the most defiant and the most modern. The opening definition of the self is famously the most convoluted sentence in philosophy, and it is deliberate.

One of the founding texts of existentialism, and Kierkegaard at his most psychologically acute.
