The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner

The first section is narrated by Benjy Compson, who is thirty-three and has no concept of time, so the year shifts between sentences without warning. The second belongs to his brother Quentin, at Harvard, on the last day of his life.

The third is Jason, who is straightforwardly cruel and therefore easy to follow. The fourth is told from outside the family. Between them they assemble what happened to their sister Caddy, who never gets a section of her own and is the centre of all four. It is hard going for fifty pages and then it opens.

Faulkner's own favourite among his books, and one of the essential works of modernism.
