The Time Machine by H. G. Wells

An unnamed inventor builds a machine that travels through time rather than space, and arrives in a future where humanity has split into two species: the gentle, useless Eloi who live above ground, and the pale Morlocks who work the machines below — and who feed on the Eloi at night.

Wells wrote it as a direct argument against Victorian faith in inevitable progress, suggesting that comfort and idleness are as likely to produce degeneration as improvement. The traveller keeps going forward afterwards, to a dying earth under a swollen red sun, in one of the bleakest endings in early science fiction.

The book that invented the time machine as a device, and still one of the best short science fiction novels ever written.
