The Travels of Ibn Battuta by Ibn Battuta
In 1325 a young Moroccan scholar left home for the Hajj and did not return for twenty-nine years. By then he had crossed Africa, Arabia, Persia, India, the Maldives and China — roughly 75,000 miles, most of it on foot and by boat.
Ibn Battuta served as a judge in Delhi, was shipwrecked, robbed and married repeatedly, and wrote it all down: the courts, the plagues, the food, the scandals. He even passed through Bengal and left one of the earliest outside accounts of the region.
A primary source that reads like an adventure novel. Indispensable for readers of medieval, Islamic and South Asian history.
