Alan Watts wrote this in 1957 and it remains the clearest account of Zen in English — partly because he spends the first half explaining what came before it, which almost nobody else does.

Taoism, the Chinese mind, the arrival of Indian Buddhism and what happened when the two met. Only then does he turn to Zen itself: the koan, sitting, the relationship between master and student, and the reason a tradition that distrusts words has produced so many of them. The chapters on Zen in art, poetry and the tea ceremony are excellent.

The book that introduced Zen to a generation of Western readers, and still the best introduction.
