Watts' argument is that the search for security is itself the source of anxiety — that a person trying to make the future safe is trying to hold water, and the harder the grip the faster it goes.

He works through the reason belief in permanence fails, the split between the thinker and the experience that creates the modern sense of separation, and the observation that the present is the only place anything ever happens. It is Eastern philosophy delivered by a Western writer with no jargon and considerable wit.

Written in 1951 and more relevant now. One of Watts' best and shortest books.
