Arthur Kipps is sent to settle the affairs of a dead widow at Eel Marsh House, reachable only across a causeway that floods twice a day. At the funeral he sees a woman in black at the back of the churchyard, and the villagers refuse to discuss her.

Hill wrote it in 1983 in the manner of a Victorian ghost story and it works entirely on restraint — mist, a pony trap heard on the marsh, a locked nursery, and a rocking chair. There is almost no gore and no explanation offered until the last page, which is one of the cruellest endings in the genre.

A modern classic of the English ghost story, and the source of the longest-running play in the West End after The Mousetrap.
