Mano Majra is a village of about seventy families on the new border, where Sikhs and Muslims have lived together so long that the trains are how they tell the time. In the summer of 1947 a moneylender is murdered, and then a train arrives from Pakistan carrying no living passengers.

Singh wrote it in 1956, and it remains the most unflinching novel about Partition because it refuses to assign the violence to strangers. The people who plan the massacre are neighbours, the magistrate does what is convenient, and the only person who acts is a village thief with no reputation left to protect.
