Ships are being attacked by something enormous in the water. A French professor, his servant and a Canadian harpooner join the hunt, are thrown overboard, and are taken aboard the thing they were chasing — a submarine, in 1870, powered by electricity.

Captain Nemo has renounced the surface world entirely for reasons he will not explain, and takes them on a tour: coral forests, the Antarctic, a giant squid, the ruins of Atlantis, and a warship he sinks without comment. Verne's engineering is described in loving detail and much of it turned out to be possible.
