In the One State everyone lives in glass apartments, wears a uniform, is known by a number, and follows a timetable that assigns hours for work, walking and sex. D-503 is building a spaceship and keeping a diary in praise of it all.

Then he meets I-330, who smokes, drinks and takes him beyond the Green Wall, and his diary becomes a record of a man discovering he has an imagination — which the State classifies as an illness with a surgical cure. Zamyatin wrote it in 1921; it was banned in the Soviet Union and Orwell reviewed it before writing 1984.
