Antoinette Cosway is a Creole heiress in postcolonial Jamaica, married off to an unnamed Englishman who renames her Bertha, isolates her from everything she knows, and eventually locks her in an attic in England.

Rhys wrote it as a prequel to Jane Eyre, giving the first Mrs Rochester a childhood, a homeland and a mind of her own before Charlotte Brontë reduces her to a monster in the walls. It is a devastating account of colonialism and marriage as the same kind of confiscation, told partly in Antoinette's voice and partly in her husband's.

One of the great postcolonial responses to a classic novel, and a masterpiece in its own right.
